This coin silver muffineer, or sugar caster, was made by New York's William Gale & Co. in 1853, as indicated by the marks on the underside. It is a noble item of staunch proportions. It stands 7" high, has a pedestaled base that is 2 3/4" in diameter, is 3 1/4" across at the widest part of the body, and weighs approximately 6.6 T. oz. It is repoussed around the middle in leaf, floral and scroll elements. The repousse repeats on a small scale on the base and the border where the lid fits. The lid has star-shaped piercings and is surmounted by a cast finial. The finial appears to be a pineapple wrapped in leaves, but at a distance, it looks like a flame. There is a feathered script "IGV" monogram. The condition is outstanding. The piece sits evenly, and has a snug fitting top. There are no dents or dings in the metal. The piercing is sharp with no tears or burrs. The finish is lustrous, with a bright, but not over polished, sheen.
