$ 195
Item #559a

This over-sized (9 1/2" long, 3.0 T. oz.), circa 1885, serving spoon might have been intended for a variety of purposes, pudding being a likely one. The handle is plain with a rounded top and a modest amount of bright cutting. There is an "ALF" script monogram on the front and a script "WM" one on the reverse. The bowl, on the other hand, is spectacularly engraved, and a true tour de force of embellishment. The ground of the bowl is a matte finish gold, cut to a mirror finish on the silver. The overall motif is ivy leaf, with wriggle work and other detailing. The bowl is 4" long by 2 1/4" at the widest by 1/2" deep. It has a flanged rim and a slightly pointed tip. The condition is immaculate. This piece shows no wear, and certainly no damage. It is marked with the old Durgin bird surrounded by stars emblem, the word Sterling, and the name of the retailer, Salem, Massachusetts' renowned D. Low.
