Providence, Rhode Island's Knowles produced a number of well-received flatware patterns. While a broad representation of these items is available in the marketplace, hollow ware examples such as this circa 1875, sterling silver 6" diameter, 1 1/2" tall, 6.5 T. oz., footed card tray are scarce. It has a 3/4" wide rolled rim and a slightly cupped interior. The surface is extensively engraved in an aesthetic (Eastlake) style. There is no monogram or inscription. The condition is very good. The form is excellent, with no dings, dents, or burrs. The engraving remains sharp. There are light surface scratches consistent with its age. The underside is stamped with the Knowles emblem, the word Sterling, and the number 3.
