Rand & Crane (circa 1896-1922) were something of an enigmatic Boston retailer. Their product sources are uncertain, but their offerings were always to a high standard. This is the case with this 8 3/4" long, immensely heavy, 5.7 T. oz., solid sterling silver crumber. The design is a pointed antique with a shell end. Several makers produced shell end designs, but the prevailing examples all had rounded ends. This design apparently stands on its own. While the rest of the piece is entirely plain, save for a script "EMF" monogram, the sheer quality of the crafting lends it elegance and refinement. The condition is outstanding estate. The form is flawless, and the finish appealing. There are light surface scratches consistent with age. Marks are the aforementioned Rand & Crane, and the word Sterling.
