Old Masters was an innovative line developed by Gorham in the mid 1880's. The series featured something like 24 figures from the classical world of art and sculpture. This piece is a 5 1/2" long, sterling silver sauce ladle. These items are cast, which provides for creating a design with a lot of detail, set in high relief. The figure on this is that of Peter Vischer. Gorham always identified the personage, and indeed this is inscribed with Vischer's name on the reverse. The bowl has a gold wash and is inscribed with a script "M." The condition is flawless. There is a bit of loss to the gold wash in the bowl, along with surface scratches consistent with gentle use. Marks are the Gorham lion, anchor, G, and the word Sterling.
