Cottage is a relatively simple 19th century American pattern carried over from French design. Gorham was especially successful with Cottage, and is the firm most associated with it. Other makers, however, did produce it, as this example by New York's John Polhamus attests. It is stamped J.P., Patent 1865, and Sterling, which places it just after Gorham's iteration. This is a 7" long, heavy, 1.5 T. oz., dessert spoon. It is engraved "Bessie" on the front. The condition is excellent. It shows scant evidence of polishing. The bowl is well-formed, and free of tip wear or dings, dents or burrs. The finish has a fine patina.
