Old Masters was an innovative line developed by Gorham in the mid 1880's. The series featured something like 24 figures from the classical world of art and sculpture. This item is an 8 1/2" long, sterling silver berry spoon. The bowl is a generous 3 3/8" x 3" x 3/4". Consistent with the line, this is heavy, weighing 4.2 T. oz. Old Masters is a cast pattern, generating designs with close detail, set in high relief. The figure on this is that of Rembrandt. Gorham always identified the personage, and indeed this is inscribed with Rembrandt's name on the reverse. The condition is outstanding. The form and finish are superb, and free of wear. There are slight traces of gold wash on the bowl, but this original finish is essentially polished away. Marks are the Gorham lion, anchor, G, and the word Sterling.
