The right, or twist, handle form of Gorham's Medallion master butter knife is less common than the flat handle version. This example is 7 1/4" long and weighs a hefty 1.5 T. oz. The classical figure is a female, probably Demeter, goddess of the harvest, as her head is encircled by a wreath of wheat. The blade is engine turned and engraved, while the backside of the handle has an Old English "D" monogram. The condition is very good, although it is evident that the piece has been used. The pattern retains clear detail, and the engine turning and engraving remain sharp and well-defined. Either side of the medallion is very slight out of round, likely as a result of resting on its side. There is a small notch on the lower edge of the blade. This appears to be decorative, but there is always the question of whether it was nicked to test the purity of the metal. Marks are the Gorham lion, anchor, G, the words Sterling and Pat. 1864, and the name of the retailer, Geo. W. Webb & Co. (Baltimore).
