Retailed by Boston's A. Stowell & Co., this sterling silver (berry) serving spoon dates from the late 19th century. It is 8 1/2" long, and weighs a substantial 1.8 T. oz. The handle is a plain antique, with a reverse tipt end, and a script "MEB" monogram. The 3 1/4 by 2" bowl has a fluted and scalloped rim, and matte finish interior that is bright cut in a jac rose design. The condition is outstanding. The form and finish are flawless. This piece shows no signs of use. Other than the retailer's stamp, it is marked only Sterling and with the number 30. The likely maker is Knowles, whose work this mirrors, and who frequently did not mark their products.
