Produced in the 1860's, this (card receiving?) tray is stamped Bigelow, Brothers and Kennard, Pure Coin, and Boston. There is also an Old English "L" and eagle mark. This suggests that BB&K were the retailers, with the likely maker Lincoln & Foss, or Haddock, Lincoln & Foss. These firms were all Boston based, and closely related. The piece is 9" x 6 5/8" and weighs 6.9 T. oz. It has a flat bottom, a tiered border, and an applied beaded rim. The interior surface is densely engraved, with a central reserve that is monogrammed "VEA" in a feathered script. The condition is very good. There is some slight unevenness and/or pinpricks to the otherwise flat surface, but these are not intrusive. The engraving remains clear and well-defined, and the border is without blemish.
