Item #785a

This coin silver goblet stands 5 7/8" high and weighs 4.7 T. oz. The top diameter is 3 1/4", and the base 2 3/4" across. It is stamped on the underside "Pure Silver Coin," which almost certainly locates this to New England, and likely Boston, circa 1850. It is a handsome, sturdy and straightforward piece. The lip and the bottom of the tiered base both have applied, beaded rolled borders. The body is engraved in a leaf and scroll design, with a central reserve area. This is blank (no inscription or removal). The construction is interesting. Goblets of this sort were either raised (with the smith hammering the surface into a shape), spun, or rolled and seamed. This is the latter, with the body and stem both made from flat sheets of metal that were rolled into a cylinder then seamed. This seam shows as a straight line on the interior of the piece (see image 4), and very slightly so on the outside, as the exterior was carefully finished to disguise construction details. The base of the cup itself shows planishing marks, so this part was formed to fit as needed, and added to the join of the two major sections. The condition is outstanding. The form is flawless, with no dings, dents, or nicks. The base sits evenly, and both the body and base retain their roundness. The engraving is crisp and the finish is lustrous.
