Intaglio is one of several very successful art nouveau patterns that Reed & Barton produceed around the turn of the 20th century. In this instance, the theme is floral, and multi-motif. This piece portrays a petunia, as identified on the reverse. Apropos of its name, the design is carved into the surface of the silver, as well as raised up. This results in a highly textured portraiture. Reed & Barton was indulgent in every way with this line. This is a true gumbo spoon. It is 7" overall, with a bowl that is 2 1/8" by 1 7/8". It weighs a massive 1.8 T. oz. The condition is very good. There is no monogram or monogram removal. The bowl is well-shaped and free of dings or dents, but does show surface scratchiness. Marks are the Reed and Barton emblem, and the words Sterling and Patent Appl'd For, indicating this is a very early example.
