This presentation goblet or chalice was given to George Gorham Peters on his birthday, December 10, 1858, by his grandfather, Samuel Williams. Genealogical information is available on the net about Mr. Peters, who was born in Boston, had a connection with Blue Hill, Maine, and graduated from Harvard University in 1880. As the piece was made by Providence's Gorham Company, and Gorham and Williams were prominent Rhode Island names, there might have been that added connection. The piece stands 6 1/2" tall, has a top diameter of 3 3/8", and a bottom diameter of 3". It weighs 5.5 T. oz. The Gorham emblem and the word Coin are set deep inside the stem. The body is engine turned, with a fancy engraved reserve which carries the inscription. There is an applied rim, and beading on the base. The condition is outstanding. There is no polishing wear, with the engine turning and engraving both remaining crisp. The fully round form is free of dents or dings, save for a very slight indentation on the rim of the foot. The finish is lustrous.
