Ariel is a scarce 19th pattern that bears the name of an airy spirit in Shakespeare's "The Tempest." The maker, Wendell Manufacturing Company of Chicago, chose to portray the figure as cherubic. Androgynous, he or she is sitting cross-legged, top and center of a highly embellished design. 8 1/4" long, this weighs a substantial 2.1 T. oz. It may have been a place item, but the heavy bowl with a pointed tip would suit it well as a serving spoon. The reverse has an Old English "D" monogram. The condition is outstanding. The figure and all other aspects of the design remain clear and well-defined. The bowl is free of tip wear and without dings, dents, or burrs. Marks are the Wendell emblem and the word Sterling.
