While George Washington tea and smaller souvenir spoons are relatively commonplace, sugar spoons such as this are not. Made by Seattle's well-regarded Joseph Mayer and Bros. circa 1900, this is a fine example of die and finish work. It is 5 7/8" long, quite heavy, and has a shell form bowl with a matte gold finish. An iconic figure, Washington's immediately recognizable bust, dating from his presidential years, is set atop the handle, with a banner below this that reads "Washington." Other of the numerous images on the front and backsides of the piece portray indigenous scenes from the American Northwest. The condition is flawless. The piece appears to have been rarely, if ever, used. Marks are the Mayer Brothers fleur-de-lis in a triangle emblem, and the word Sterling.
