This circa 1870 sterling silver, 6 3/4" long preserve or jelly spoon was made by John Westervelt, who was a significant mid to late 19th century manufacturer located in Newburgh, New York. This Ivy pattern was one of several die struck designs he produced, and seems to have been well received by the market, given the variety of pieces in it that are still available. This has an appealing, shell variant bowl that is generously proportioned. There is a flowing "MCH" monogram. The condition is excellent. The form is flawless, and polishing wear is scant. The bowl is free of dings, dents, or burrs. Marks are Westervelt's pseudo hallmark, Sterling, and the name of the retailer "xxxxx Purdy."
