Stamped "Patent 1868" and "WwH," this cake saw represents one of Wood and Hughes' earliest patterns. It is not documented in any of the standard pattern references, but the design is recorded in the United States patent office, and a copy of the original issue is available, with the patent noted as granted December 1, 1868. The style is gothic with ornamentation. Curiously, this is basically Wood & Hughes' later "Angelo" pattern, less the interior detailing. The form is a 9 5/8" long, coin silver cake saw with a flat handle and solid blade. The top edge of the blade is saw tooth, as is typical of these items, and the wide surface is decoratively engraved. There is no monogram or monogram removal. The condition is outstanding. The piece has seen little use. Apart from light surface scratches consistent with age, there are no signs of wear or damage.
