This Gorham coin silver spooner stands 3 3/4" high, is 5 1/4" wide from handle end to handle end, has a base diameter of 2 1/2", and a top diameter of 3 1/4". It weighs 5.7 T. oz. Marks are the Gorham lion, anchor, G, 140, and the name of the retailer, Portland, Maine's Lowell & Senter. Although itself not date coded, it is engraved "Dec. 15, 1867" and "SIG," so the 1867 inscription indicates this was produced just before Gorham went to a sterling standard in 1868. It has two solid silver handles, each of which is surmounted by a butterfly (or moth). It has a rimmed base, has a rimmed lip, and a decorative band around the lower portion of the body. The form appears to be a spooner, but if SIG was a child, then this could have been a drinking vessel. The condition is excellent. The piece is free of dings or dents, sits evenly, and retains its roundness.
