Item #514b

This serving piece is generally identified as a fried oyster server. It could be a fried egg server as well. The form also shows up in ice cream sets (see Old Friends item 519b), so the argument is equally strong that it is an ice cream spade. In any case, it is an appealing piece of Gorham's Medallion. This example is 9 5/8" long, and solid weight at 2.6 T. oz. It has an ovoid, essentially flat serving end with a cupped heel and flanged edges. Inspired by classical figures, this item features a helmeted warrior, probably Mars. The reverse is monogrammed "C.R." in Old English lettering. Gorham retailed a great deal of its Medallion flatware through Tiffany & Co. in New York, and made it in sterling to satisfy the requirements of that outlet. As this is unmarked as to a standard, having just the lion, anchor, G, and Patent 1864. stamps, this is probably coin silver, which makes it rarer, and earlier, than much of what is available. It is in excellent estate condition. The figure retains clarity of detail, having been spared polishing wear. The blade is even and free of bends or dents. It does show surface scratches consistent with age and use.
