This example of Gorham's Medallion is the largest version of at least three sugar sifter forms. It is 7 1/2" long, has a bowl 2 1/2" in diameter, and weighs 2.3 T. oz. Inspired by classical figures, this item features a helmeted warrior, probably Mars. The reverse is monogrammed "C.R." in Old English lettering. (It is a companion item to Old Friends 514b, as indicated by the matching monogram.) Gorham retailed a great deal of its Medallion flatware through Tiffany & Co. in New York, and made it in sterling to satisfy the requirements of that outlet. As this is unmarked as to a standard, having just the lion, anchor, G, and Patent 1864. stamps, this is probably coin silver, which makes it rarer, and earlier, than much of what is available. It is in excellent estate condition. The figure retains clarity of detail, having been spared polishing wear. The bowl is free of bends or dents, or damage to the piercing, and retains traces of an original gold wash.
