Christopher Giffing's birth year is listed as 1789, which would have made him apprentice age during the period when the coffin end style was popular. The design of this 5 3/16" long spoon shows the coffin end influence, but it is migrating toward something else and probably dates about 1815. It has a straight tapered handle with vaguely clipped corners, but also exhibits a slightly curved shank and defined shoulders where it joins the bowl. The backside of the bowl has a vee lined drop with stitchery detailing. There is a feathered script "JW" monogram. The condition is very good. The bowl has some pebbling in the base, but retains excellent shape and has a well-formed tip.
