Stamped "Sterling" and "204," this tea strainer is unidentified as to maker. Based on the quality of its construction, merited design, and fine finish, it was produced by a substantial American manufacturer. It is a large item, measuring 6 3/4" across to the handle tip, and with a bowl that is 2 3/4" in diameter by 1" deep, and weighs a proportionately solid 1.4 T. oz. Inscribed with an Old English "S" on the front, and 1888-1913 on the back, it was undoubtedly a 25th wedding gift. The design reflects early 20th century sensibilities, suggesting elements of arts & crafts moving toward the art deco. The motif is created by a simple, shaped handle that is stylistically engraved, with the engraving carried into the bowl. The bowl has an applied rim, sloping sides, and a delicately pierced saucer base with a nipple center to accumulate and direct the last droplets of tea. It all is quite thoughtfully conceived and executed. It is also in impeccable condition.
