This sterling silver gravy ladle is appealing for its clean, straightforward design, along with its rugged, utilitarian sensibility. It has English hallmarks for London, 1838, and the script "JW" touchmark for silversmith John James Whiting. There is also a small impressed heart above the maker's letters. It is 7" long and weighs 2.6 T. oz. The pattern is a reverse fiddle tipt and there is no monogram or removal. There is a thumb drop on the reverse of the bowl. The condition is excellent, with but expected surface scratches from use, no dents in the bowl, and a fine finish.
