San Francisco's George C. Shreve is known for its high quality products, and especially for its early 20th century arts & crafts style flatware and holloware. This sterling silver footed bowl, probably also turn of the 20th century, is evidence of the company's fine output in a variety of styles. It follows along in classical manner. It is urn form, standing 2 1/2" tall, sits on a base that is 2" in diameter, and has a rimmed top that is 2 7/8" across. The body is bulbous and is decorated in a scroll and floral (wild rose?) design. This work is graceful and restrained. This could be a large open salt, nut dish, or for some other purpose. It is in immaculate condition, free of damage and with a strikingly fine finish. The underside is marked Shreve & Co., Sterling, and 2043.
