This sterling sauce or cream ladle is 6 1/4" long and weighs 1.5 T. oz. It bears hallmarks for Edinburgh, Scotland, 1818, and carries the maker's letters "J.D," one possibility being James Douglas. It is an elegantly proportioned item, with a slender, elongated shank, high shoulders coming off the bowl, which has a thumb drop on the back, and a fiddle end with a well-defined tipt reverse. There is a feathered script "B" monogram, with the number "4" beneath this. The number may have been its identifying place in a set. The bowl is perfectly round, 1 3/4" in diameter and 1/2" deep, rather than the typical ovoid shape of ladles. The condition is excellent. The form is essentially perfect and the finish is highly appealing.
