Asparagus tongs are usually small items used for individual place settings. This pair follows that form, with two horizontal grips set at right angles to the legs, but are a large 5" long, with 2 1/4" by 5/8" grips. The inventory for the Lancaster pattern as listed in the 1898 Gorham catalog includes asparagus servers and asparagus tongs. The tongs are entered under the heading "miscellaneous" and include such other pieces as butter knife pick, chocolate muddler, food pusher, and additional tongs. These would seem to be the asparagus tongs as listed, and are meant as a serving item. The piece is all original, and in immaculate condition. There is no monogram or removal, nor cracks or bends, and the finish is finely patinated. The piercing on the grips includes rose leaves, which is fitting given the main element of the design is a cluster of rose blossoms. The inside arm is stamped with Gorham's lion, anchor, G, and the word Sterling.
