John J. Stowell, whose mark appears on this 5 3/4" long Sheaf of Wheat coin teaspoon was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1793, and was known to be working as a clockmaker and jeweler in Boston 1823-25, the likely period of this piece. He died in 1834. A piece in this design by him has to be a rarity. It is a quality item with some modest wear. There is a feathered script "NSB" (?) monogram that is slightly softened from polishing, as is the sheaf of wheat itself. The bowl is well shaped and free of dings or dents, but shows very slight tip wear. The finish is nicely patinated.
