Issac Reed (Philadelphia) Coin Silver Tongs
$ 50
The mark on this pair of 6 3/8" long, 1.2 t. oz., c. 1830, coin silver tongs is "I. Reed." with an eagle. This could be Issac Reed of Stamford, Connecticut, or the same name from Philadelphia. The presence of the eagle points to the latter, as this is identified as a "Philadelphia eagle" by John McGrew in his work on pseudo hallmarks. This has a feathered script "AMS" monogram on the 3/4" wide top arch, and generously proportioned cup grips. The condition is very good. There are no breaks or bends, although there is a slight bit of crimping on the edge on one arm. The finish is pleasing, and the monogram is crisp, showing no polishing wear, which can be said of the whole piece.
