A common or garden Georgian fish slice may not sound too appealing. Apart from being practical, sturdy and old, there is not too much else to say about them. Occasionally, one surfaces that has a few eye-catching features, like this one. The center of the curved blade has three engraved fish on a pierced grill, also finely engraved. In fact, around the central grill and all round the border of the blade runs a series of finely engraved lines. Now this is all hand-engraved, it must have taken ...click for details

Moses Eastman was born in Concord, NH in 1794 but by 1826 had formed a 2-year partnership with J. Penfield in Savannah, GA. The same J. This ladle has a plain oval bowl and a upturned fiddle terminal, monogramed on t ...click for details

This is a very attractive set, of fish knife and fork, by Hyde & Goodrich, New Orleans c.1850. The knife has a pierced blade profusely engraved with scrolls and floral decoration around a vignette of an island scene. The fork blade too is similarly densely engraved on both sides. The handle of each is double-struck with a reeded decoration ending in an upturned oval terminal. The original monogram has been expertly removed before the existing one was engraved. It is unfortunate but it is not ...click for details

This is quite a robust coin ladle in the fiddle and thread pattern by a firm I had not encountered before, Bennett & Bros, 586 Broadway. I addition on the rear of the fiddle there is an inscribed date of 1852, presumably from when it dates. The top face of the fiddle has had a monogram removed. It has been very professionally done because, at first, one, that's me, would think it was the designed curvature of the handle. The area has even acquired its own patina. I wish my silversmith wa ...click for details
