This item traces to mid 19th Baltimore and reflects the character of early silver from that city. Sugar tongs, they measure 5" long, and at 1.7 T. oz., are exceptionally heavy for their size. Stamped "S. Kirk & Son" and "10.15" for the peculiar-to-Baltimore silver standard that is essentially equivalent to coin, each arm is chased in a high relief flower and leaf design that is akin to Kirk's holloware of the period, as illustrated, for example, in Maryland Silver published... height 4 inches excluding handle, top diameter 3 1/4 inches, weight 6.67 Troy ounces, marked Wm Glaze with another partially effaced mark as shown in fourth enlargement.
Those with long memories will recognize this as the same mug which sold at Charlton Hall, June 14 2009, (lot 730) for 1725.00. Please take a moment to look at those catalogue photos (see fifth enlargement), and you will notice a few dents and some surface abrasion presumably due to improper cleaning with steel wool. We... A popular mid 19th century motif, the (acanthus) Leaf pattern of this c. 1865, 7 1/4" long, 1.3 T. oz., coin silver master butter knife was produced by a number of makers, including Albert Coles, whose "eagle, AC, bust" emblem appears on the handle backside. It is of additional interest given it was marketed by Joseph Werne of Louisville, Kentucky, whose name is also stamped on the blade back, alongside Coles' hallmark.
