Having rounded, double scroll shoulders, with a triple leaf drop and a different single leaf also flanked by scrolls set mid handle, "Pacific" issued in 1870 by San Francisco's Schulz & Fisher was very much a period design. It is highly reminiscent, for example, of Knowles & Ladd "Crete" and Gorham's "Pompeii," both contemporaneous with "Pacific."

This example is an 8 7/8" long, 1.9 T. oz., pie server marked "coin" for the silver content.

It has a generously proportioned, 4 1/2" by 2 7/8"... Click for details

This spoon is an interesting mystery, that might be easily solved, or not. If you can provide a definitive identification of the maker of this spoon, with a reference, you will receive a nice coin silver spoon in good condition, or $15 off your next order with me. This spoon resembles some spoons by William Moulton, and may be by him, though I've not located a reference to this specific maker's mark. It could also be by someone else. The heel is quite specific. The spoon appears dirty, but... Click for details

Offered is an interesting coin silver dessert spoon made circa 1850s by Gorham & Co. (John Gorham, Gorham Thurber and Lewis Dexter), in business in Providence, Rhode Island between 1852 and 1875. This framed mark with scalloped corners is most common in Providence silver of the 1840s and 50s, and multiple silversmiths and firms seem to have called upon the same die cutter. The framed mark for Gorham & Co. seems to be a fairly uncommon variant, perhaps used only for the first few years of the... Click for details

This spoon has a slimmer spatulate handle and greater weight than their more American-style wares - the Wilsons seem to have had a line of silver flatware more akin to British examples of the times, and these were usually marked with the R&WW mark. This American coin silver tablespoon dating to about 1820-40 is not for sale, but rather one that I need some help with. It measures about 9 1/8 inches in length and weighs about 50 grams. It has a faint period script engraved monogram running across the top of the handle, and a maker's mark of D.G in a rectangular punch. This piece has a mid-Atlantic or Midwestern feel, though it could be from some places in the American South outside of the major cities. It is almost certainly not by David... Click for details

Offered is a good Philadelphia coin silver spoon bearing the extremely rare mark of John & Phineas Fries, circa 1837 (the single year of their partnership). While coin silver spoons and other items bearing only the maker's mark of John Fries are somewhat common, and those with just Phineas Fries' maker's mark are scarce but not rare, the mark of their partnership is very hard to find. The mark on this spoon was used for the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" by Catherine Hollan, and in twenty... Click for details

The pattern on this 9" long, weighty at 2.8 T. oz., pie server is a "Leaf & Scroll" design that is indigenous to Philadelphia.

It is illustrated in a "handle patterns" unit of Catherine Hollan's Philadelphia Silversmiths, where it is attributed to Robert and William Wilson, a partnership that dates from the second quarter of the 19th century, and their "R.&W. Wilson" mark does appear on the backside of this coin silver piece.

This 7" long place or dessert spoon stands apart on several counts, the first of which is its exceptionally heavy weight at marginally over 2.0 T. oz.

Secondly, marked "Tiffany & Co.," it traces to the early years of the firm when it operated solely as a retailer.

In this case the maker was Henry Hebbard, whose three part "star, H, anchor" pseudo hallmark appears on the handle backside.

Thirdly, it is to a coin silver standard, so stamped, which is unusual for Tiffany which prompted,... Click for details
