Bonbonnieres are bonbon spoons set large.

The form was popular in the late 19th century, and no company was more successful in producing impressive examples than Gorham. This example is model number "588" offered by that firm.

It is medium-sized, measuring 6 1/8" long, has a bowl that is roughly 2 3/4" in diameter, and weighs just under 2.0 T. oz.

Offered is a rare example of the work and maker's mark of Jean-Felix LeFevre (1780 - 1813), silversmith of Philadelphia. This piece measures about 6 1/16 inches in length and weighs about 18 grams. This piece has a rubbed but legible maker's mark and a period engraved script monogram, perhaps of "CF". Condition is very good, with no dents, splits or repairs and only moderate surface wear from normal use. This piece should date to around 1800-13. All in all a good example of this interesting... Syracuse, New York, was a major silver manufacturing center in the mid to late 19th century. Joseph Seymour, the maker of this 8 1/4" long, 1.9 T. oz., berry spoon, was one of the most prominent names among that city's firms, with a history that began in 1846, terminating in 1905.

height 5 1/2; length across handle 6 1/4 inches, weight 14.1 Troy ounces, the body richly chased with rose flowers, foliage and a band of acanthus leaves below, the realistically formed wrythen grapevine handle fastened together with silver tacks (see second enlargement), engraved "Minnie / June 2nd / 1875" in cartouche under spout, capacity one quart, fine condition.

If only we knew a bit more about Minnie, a good tale might be told, but alas we know nothing of this lass.

Offered is a good American coin silver tea spoon by Philadelphia silversmith Samuel Hutchinson, working in that city circa 1828-39. This teaspoon bears a clear, well-struck maker's mark for Hutchinson, and in this case he was probably the retailer rather than the maker as the spoon also has a floret mark used by John Curry and was probably made by Curry. Marked only "coin," back in the day we would have hastened to read through many musty issues of "Silver Magazine" in order to find the maker of this fine ladle, but now, in our dotage, we will leave this task to you, dear reader.
