ABOUT: I love sterling silver and this is a lovely little offering from the Victorian era / late 1800s made by Gorham Mfg. Co. in an acid etched floral aesthetic design. It is a perfume flask, I believe it was meant to be carried in a purse or pouch as it does not have a loop for a chatelaine chain. I poured water in it to make sure it has no leaks. I also discovered when I was emptying the water out that they shaped it so that it lets the liquid out a few drops at a time (instead of pouring out quickly) which is very convenient for use with perfume. Has a three initial monogram on the back in a very artistic style. Beautifully detailed intricate designs of flowers, leaves and stems. Faint smell of perfume remains inside when you open the lid and smell it. Lid screws on very tightly and securely. The threads of the screw top are still sharp so it spins open and closed nicely. MEASUREMENTS: Measures 4 inches in length by a little under 1 inch wide at the widest area. Weighs 21 grams and has a sturdy hand feel. HALLMARKS: Marked on the underside with the Gorham Hallmarks, Sterling and 220. The hallmarks are faint from wear but they are there. The design of the Gorham hallmarks dates the manufacture date to the late 1800s. Condition Notes: In good estate condition considering age with just a few pinhead dings here and there and some areas of stubborn tarnish, the designs are still nice and crisp with beautiful detail. I count maybe 7 tiny pin dings, almost all of which are on the sides of the piece. And then there is one shallow linear indentation measuring about a half a centimeter below the flower details. Again it is shallow so you only see a shadow when studying it in a reflection. Some stubborn tarnish remains and one slightly discolored area on the back at the bottom of the monogram. Has been hand polished but retains some patina in the background to really make the design stand out. No damage or wear to any of the etched floral designs that I could see. Just the smooth areas where any nicks, surface wear or scratches are made more evident by the mirrored finish. Please see photos closely as this is not a mint condition piece due to age of over 100 years.
