Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
Mid-18th Century English Hanoverian Spoon with Lovely Cipher
SOLD
Offered is a very fine and heavy mid-18th Century (ca. 1735-60) English sterling silver teaspoon, with a spectacular and rare cipher form set of period engraved initials that appear to be "ELL". This spoon has a squeezed maker's mark with enough unique features that it should be solvable with some diligent reviewing of Grimwade. The lion passant mark is more legible. This spoon measures about 4 1/4 inches in length and weighs a very heavy 15 grams - about twice the weight of most American spoons of the period, and significantly heavier than most English spoons - this one is top quality. Condition is very good overall with wear from normal use but no dents, splits or repairs. All in all a superb example of the form and of a real period cipher!
