Offered is a nice American coin silver teaspoon marked J.W.JOHNSTON and also marked with a wheel-form manufacturer's mark often associated with Detroit. The only J. W. Johnston I've found is a jeweler working in Pittsburgh between at least 1863-67, and because spoons with this mark are sometimes found here in Pittsburgh, I've tentatively assigned this mark to that man. The marks on this piece are rubbed but mostly legible, and the spoon also has a period engraved script monogram of "LRB". It ...

Offered is a very nice and well-preserved American coin silver teaspoon marked ANDERSON in a rectangular punch; this spoon has a Pennsylvania or perhaps Maryland or Virginia feel to it, but of course could have been retailed by a Southerner elsewhere. This mark has at times been attributed to makers in South Carolina and Ohio, but I'm not at all sure of any attributions for this mark. Joseph Anderson of Philadelphia is one possibility, as he was working circa 1858-61 and this spoon would be th...

Offered is a nice typical 1820s Boston coin silver spoon by T. A. Davis. It has a rubbed but legible maker's mark and a period engraved script monogram of "BL". The form is consistent with Boston spoons of the 1820s - fairly light, square shoulders, and monogram running across the spoon. This spoon measures about 5 3/8 inches in length and weighs about 11 grams. Condition is fairly good, with modest wear and the bowl very slightly out of round, but no splits or repairs. All in all a nice se...

It measures about 6 inches in length and weighs about 20 grams. Condition is good overall, with minor surface wear and a small shallow ding to the bowl, and other modest signs of use;...

Offered is a good Southern coin silver spoon - a fiddle and thread pattern teaspoon by noted New Orleans firm Hyde & Goodrich, which both retailed silver and made pieces in-house. This may be a New Orleans-made spoon as there are no manufacturer's marks, only the maker's mark of Hyde & Goodrich This spoon is not monogrammed, and there are no obvious signs of an erasure, though it can't be ruled out. This spoon measures about 6 3/8 inches in length and weighs about 26 grams. Condition overall...

Offered is a delicate and much loved American coin silver teaspoon by Hagerstown, MD silversmith Henry Biershing (1790-1843), circa 1815. This piece is engraved "EVP" in period script and has a clear, well-struck maker's mark. It measures about 5 inches in length and weighs about 9 grams. Condition is fair, with lots of little dings and scratches to the bowl, and some surface wear to the handle (see all pictures), but no splits or repairs. Offered is a set of six dessert spoons by the scarce maker Daniel F. Roberts, working 1850-51 in Philadelphia, PA. This set was featured in the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" by Catherine Hollan, and the mark on them was used for that book. This is the only example of Daniel F. Roberts' mark yet found - not surprising considering his very short working life of about a year or less. These spoons measure about 7 3/8 inches in length and weigh about 231 grams. They are each engraved with ...

Offered is a nice example of a form and style particular to Baltimore in the 1820s-40s, a spatulate swell-handled spoon with pointed Philadelphia-style shoulders and a monogram perched almost mid-way down the handle. In this case, the period script initials are "AHS". This piece bears a maker's mark for Samuel Kirk, and a 10:15 fineness mark for the silver quality. This spoon measures about 5 5/8 inches in length and weighs a good 25 grams. Condition is good overall, with signs of normal use...

Offered is a lovely English brass candlestick dating from the end of Queen Anne's reign, more than three centuries ago. This stick dates to about 1705-15 by style, and measures around 7 1/4 inches tall. It weighs a good 17.6 ounces or around 500 grams. This candle holder has a hexagonal base and a pleasing mellow surface, with good even patina. It is free of significant damage, and stands quite straight on a tabletop, with minimal to no wobble. It appears to be unusually well preserved. Al...

Offered is a fine and rare early 19th Century American coin silver teaspoon by little known clockmaker, watchmaker and silversmith Frederick Ezra Nusz (ca. 1799-1832), who was listed in directories only in 1818-19, but likely worked a few more years. There are seven known clocks with his name affixed, and occasionally flatware or a watch paper appears. This is a lovely and well-made teaspoon, measuring about 5 3/4 inches in length and weighing about 15 grams. It is engraved with period script...

Offered is a lovely and well-made George III sterling silver gravy ladle or sauce ladle hallmarked for London, 1772, and engraved with an armorial of an eagle's head or perhaps phoenix's head erased. The maker's mark is squeezed, but appears to be "?W" over "?T" - the year is too early for Wakelin and Taylor, so someone else. This piece is very nicely made, better than the usual, and the engraving is also very good. This ladle measures about 6 3/4 inches in length and weighs about 53 grams. ...

Offered is a good 1790s American coin silver teaspoon by noted silversmith Thomas Arnold (1735-1828), who worked in Newport circa 1760-1817. Mr. Arnold had the interesting habit of marking many of his spoons, like this one, with both his initials mark and his full name mark. He was also interesting in that he was a prominent citizen of Newport. Per his Wikipedia entry, "According to the Newport Mercury of September 12, 1774, he received a master's degree from college in Providence, where ...

Offered is a nice American coin silver fork in the Queen's pattern or a variant thereof, by noted maker William Ingalls Tenney (1806-1848), probably dating to the 1820s before he went into partnership in 1828. This piece measures about 6 5/8 inches in length and weighs a very good 36 grams. This fork has a well-struck maker's mark and a partly legible address mark for Tenney's Broadway shop in New York City. It is also engraved to the front with a set of period initials, and was a gift piece....

Offered is a nice early 19th Century Boston coin silver teaspoon by Robert Evans (1768-1812), working circa 1788-1810 at shops on Ann Street and then Hanover Street. This piece is marked with one of his maker's marks and is also engraved "RP" in period script. The style is transitional between pointed-end, coffin-end and fiddle, and such pieces were made only for a brief time. This spoon measures about 5 1/8 inches in length and weighs about 7 grams. Condition is fairly good, with the bowl s...

Offered is a very nice 1790s Philadelphia coin silver teaspoon by silversmith Matthias Lamar (fl. 1785-1809), of whom relatively little is known. This spoon could use a polish, but is very nicely decorated all along the stem with lovely engraving and also has period block initials of SW. To the reverse is a full-name mark of LAMAR, given to Matthias by Catherine Hollan in her book "Philadelphia Silversmiths." This spoon measures about 5 1/8 inches in length and weighs about 8 grams. Offered is a scarce example of the silverwork of Amos Doolittle (1754-1832), a New Haven, Connecticut silversmith. Mr. Doolittle is equally well known for having served in the American Revolution; he was one of the men who marched under the command of later turncoat Benedict Arnold in the Spring of 1775. He was also a founder of the Governor's Foot Guard. This teaspoon is engraved SWN in period script, and is marked with Amos Doolittle's documented maker's mark to the reverse (see all pic...
