Offered is a scarce antique Scottish Provincial silver teaspoon by James Walker of Aberdeen, working between 1847 and 1876. This spoon features an engraved period script monogram and a full name maker's mark of WALKER; there is also a really nice town mark broken into four punches of two letters each. This piece measures about 5 1/4 inches in length and weighs about 15 grams. Condition is fair to good overall, with some wear, but no major dings and no splits or repairs. All in all a scarce pi...

Offered is a quite rare example of the work of Philadelphia jeweler and silversmith Frederick H. Smith, working from 1833 to 1845 with silver, and then in related lines thereafter. This spoon probably dates to the earlier part of his career. It has a very clear maker's mark, and this mark was pictured in the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" by Catherine Hollan. Smith's output, at least for flatware, seems to have been very small. This piece also has a period engraved script monogram. This t...

Offered is a nice American coin silver sauce ladle with fluted bowl and a great strike of the maker's mark. This piece also has period engraving to the handle. I didn't track down this tradesman, but would be interested in hearing about his whereabouts. This ladle measures about 6 inches in length and weighs about 22 grams. Condition is very good, with modest wear but no major dents and no splits or repairs. All in all a nice useful serving piece and a nice example of this mark!

Offered is a nice little American coin silver salt spoon marked J.B.SHEPARD in a rectangular punch, circa 1825-50. The location of this silversmith is unknown to me - if anyone can educate me, it would be most welcome! This piece is not engraved, and it is difficult to tell if it once had a monogram. The maker's mark is a little rubbed but is legible. This piece measures about 3 3/4 inches in length and weighs about 5 grams. Condition overall is fair, with some surface wear and small signs ...

This piece has a good clear maker's mark for the partnership, and also features a period engraved script monogram. This spoon measures about 3 1/2 inches in length and weighs about 4 grams. Condition is fair overall, with some wear and signs of use, but no splits or repairs. All in all a nice example of this maker's mar...

Offered is an interesting early French silver table spoon dating to before the French Revolution, and a survivor of the French occupation of San Domingo (Saint-Domingue), which ended in 1804. This tablespoon bears 18th Century French silver hallmarks and is engraved in later writing with the family name of Danieux to the front and an inscription to the reverse documenting the history of the spoon. This piece is quite heavy, measuring about 8 inches in length and weighing about 79 grams. Condi...

Offered is a very rare example of the maker's mark or retailer's mark of the firm of Joseph W. Cary & Co. (see biographical information, which has some inaccuracies, below), of Alton, Illinois from the 1840s through about 1875, and of St. Louis, Missouri thereafter. Norman Mack, the author of "Missouri's Silver Age", indicates that no example of the work of this firm have been located. Either only a few pieces have survived, or the majority of spoons bearing this mark were made for, and remain...

Offered is a good Philadelphia coin silver spoon bearing the extremely rare mark of John & Phineas Fries, circa 1837 (the single year of their partnership). While coin silver spoons and other items bearing only the maker's mark of John Fries are somewhat common, and those with just Phineas Fries' maker's mark are scarce but not rare, the mark of their partnership is very hard to find. The mark on this spoon was used for the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" by Catherine Hollan, and in twenty ye...

This American coin silver tablespoon dating to about 1820-40 is not for sale, but rather one that I need some help with. It measures about 9 1/8 inches in length and weighs about 50 grams. It has a faint period script engraved monogram running across the top of the handle, and a maker's mark of D.G in a rectangular punch. This piece has a mid-Atlantic or Midwestern feel, though it could be from some places in the American South outside of the major cities. It is almost certainly not by David...

Offered is a lovely and well-made American coin silver teaspoon by the noted firm of Robert and William Wilson, working as R. & W. Wilson of Philadelphia circa 1825-50. This spoon has a slimmer spatulate handle and greater weight than their more American-style wares - the Wilsons seem to have had a line of silver flatware more akin to British examples of the times, and these were usually marked with the R&WW mark. This spoon measures about 6 1/8 inches long and weighs a very heavy 26 grams. I...

Offered is a very good American coin silver teaspoon bearing the maker's mark or retailer's mark of Philadelphia watchmaker and jeweler John J. Parry (fl. 1790s - 1835); this spoon should date to about 1825 and bears the Philadelphia eagle mark that either signifies manufacture by R. & W. Wilson, or was used by a percentage of the makers of Philadelphia between about 1825-50 to denote quality and/or origin. See my other listings for a separate and somewhat earlier piece bearing Parry's mark alo...

Offered is an interesting coin silver dessert spoon made circa 1850s by Gorham & Co. (John Gorham, Gorham Thurber and Lewis Dexter), in business in Providence, Rhode Island between 1852 and 1875. This framed mark with scalloped corners is most common in Providence silver of the 1840s and 50s, and multiple silversmiths and firms seem to have called upon the same die cutter. The framed mark for Gorham & Co. seems to be a fairly uncommon variant, perhaps used only for the first few years of the p...
