Offered is a nice early American coin silver spoon bearing the maker's mark JAS.D.PHILIPS, probably for a man of that name who worked in New York. This mark has been mis-attributed to a Cincinnati and Kentucky silversmith, but the style of this piece likely precludes such an attribution. This piece has a clear, well-struck maker's mark and a worn but legible period script "BEB" monogram. This spoon measures about 5 7/8 inches in length and weighs about 15 grams...

Offered is a quite rare example of the work of Philadelphia jeweler and silversmith Frederick H. Smith, working from 1833 to 1845 with silver, and then in related lines thereafter. This spoon probably dates to the earlier part of his career. It has a very clear maker's mark, and this mark was pictured in the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" by Catherine Hollan. Smith's output, at least for flatware, seems to have been very small. This piece also has a period engraved script monogram...

Offered is a nice little American coin silver salt spoon marked J.B.SHEPARD in a rectangular punch, circa 1825-50. The location of this silversmith is unknown to me - if anyone can educate me, it would be most welcome! This piece is not engraved, and it is difficult to tell if it once had a monogram. The maker's mark is a little rubbed but is legible. This piece measures about 3 3/4 inches in length and weighs about 5 grams...

(see biographical information, which has some inaccuracies, below), of Alton, Illinois from the 1840s through about 1875, and of St. Louis, Missouri thereafter. Offered is a good Philadelphia coin silver spoon bearing the extremely rare mark of John & Phineas Fries, circa 1837 (the single year of their partnership). While coin silver spoons and other items bearing only the maker's mark of John Fries are somewhat common, and those with just Phineas Fries' maker's mark are scarce but not rare, the mark of their partnership is very hard to find. The mark on this spoon was used for the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" by Catherine Hollan, and in twenty ye...

This American coin silver tablespoon dating to about 1820-40 is not for sale, but rather one that I need some help with. It measures about 9 1/8 inches in length and weighs about 50 grams. It has a faint period script engraved monogram running across the top of the handle, and a maker's mark of D.G in a rectangular punch. This piece has a mid-Atlantic or Midwestern feel, though it could be from some places in the American South outside of the major cities. It is almost certainly not by David...

Offered is a lovely and well-made American coin silver teaspoon by the noted firm of Robert and William Wilson, working as R. & W. Wilson of Philadelphia circa 1825-50. This spoon has a slimmer spatulate handle and greater weight than their more American-style wares - the Wilsons seem to have had a line of silver flatware more akin to British examples of the times, and these were usually marked with the R&WW mark. This spoon measures about 6 1/8 inches long and weighs a very heavy 26 grams. I...
