Offered is a fine and rare pair of early American coin silver sugar tongs by the celebrated Philadelphia partnership of Lewis & Smith. Harvey Lewis and Joseph D. Smith worked in partnership from about 1805 to 1811, and produced some of the most finely executed and beautifully engraved silver of their era. Many examples of their excellent hollowware and flatware are extant in public collections.
This piece measures about 6 3/4 inches in length, and weighs about 54 grams. It features a legible maker's mark, a nicely executed period engraved script monogram to the bow, and interesting and unusually decorated grips. Condition of this piece is very good overall, with modest wear from normal use, and no dents, splits or repairs. All in all a lovely piece of Philadelphia coin silver, more than two centuries old!
