Offered is a lovely pair of late 18th Century Rhode Island coin silver table spoons by noted silversmith Thomas Arnold (b. 1735 - d. 1828), working in Newport between about 1760 and 1817. These tablespoons are decorated with period engraved script monograms, the placement and style of which closely relates to the engraving on other Thomas Arnold spoons of the period. These spoons by style should date to about 1785-1800, but could be a few years earlier or later. Each spoon is marked with both Arnold's initials mark, as well as one of his full name marks, as is often the case with his work. In this case, the mark combination matches mark "d" in Belden, page 35. Each spoon's maker's marks are clear and well-struck. These spoons measure between 9 1/8 and 9 1/4 inches in length and weigh a total of about 107 grams for the pair. Condition on one spoon is very good, with minor tip wear and no dents, splits or repairs. Condition on the other is good, with somewhat more tip wear and a surface blemish below the monogram (see pictures). All in all a lovely and desirable pair of 18th Century Newport coin silver spoons!
