Offered is a lovely and quite early George II English sterling silver basting spoon or hash spoon by noted specialist spoonmaker Philip Roker II, working from the 1720s on. The maker's mark on this spoon was registered in August 1720 and used at least through 1735, and this piece is consistent with similar hash spoons with date letters in the 1730s. Interestingly, the marks accompanying Roker's maker's marks are pseudo-hallmarks, apparently occasionally used by Roker to give the appearance of assay marks. This piece also has a period armorial of a hawk or falcon. Condition on this piece is excellent overall, with little tip or surface wear, some fine scratching from normal use, and no splits or repairs. There are one or two very shallow bumps to the bowl (see pics), but nothing visible absent a raking light. This piece measures about 13 1/2 inches in length and weighs a substantial 202 grams. The quality is excellent. All in all a fine example of an early Georgian serving piece by a sought-after maker!
