Offered is a nice Southern coin silver dessert spoon by noted Norfolk, Virginia silversmith Joseph M. Freeman, with period engraving of "Dr. Willson" over "USN". This piece probably dates to the 1830s or 1840s, and Dr. Willson was presumably a Navy surgeon attached to the Atlantic Fleet at Norfolk at that time. Given the Navy's extensive records and the availability of resources at Norfolk and at the Navy Museum in Washington, it is quite likely Dr. Willson could be tracked down and pinpointed. This piece has a legible maker's mark, and the engraving is quite nice as well. This dessert spoon measures about 7 1/8 inches in length and weighs about 30 grams. Condition is fair overall, with some surface wear and dings to the bowl, but no splits or repairs. Please take a look at all of the pictures. All in all an interesting piece of Southern coin silver with Navy and medical interest!
