SOLD

Offered is a lovely pair of American coin silver spectacles by the important McAllister family of opticians and spectacle makers - in this case, the pair matches catalog drawings from the 1850s and 1860s, during the period the firm was headed by the William Y McAllister and Thomas H. McAllister, and was known as McAllister and Brother. The McAllister family are the most important makers in this field, and their spectacles are not uncommon, but are desirable. This particular set has octagonal lenses, and may have been for a woman, though it is hard to be sure. This piece is clearly marked McALLISTER to the frame. This pair of spectacles measures about 4 5/16 inches across the temples, and weighs about 21 grams. Condition appears to be excellent overall, with no obvious damage to the frames and no damage to the lenses beyond normal wear - no big scratches or chips. All in all a fine example of the form, worthy of any collection!
