Fine Crested Philadelphia Coin Silver Dessert Spoon by Edward Lownes
$45.00
Offered is a lovely early American coin silver dessert spoon with a unicorn armorial by noted Philadelphia silversmith Edward Lownes; unlike the plethora of crested "National Trust Replica" crested spoons bearing Lownes' maker's mark, this one is the real deal - a period Philadelphia spoon circa 1820-35, with a lovely armorial of a unicorn's head. This piece measures about 7 3/8 inches in length and weighs about 40 grams. The armorial and the maker's mark are both in great shape. The bowl was once suffering from a split to the side, but has an interesting repair, almost certainly done in the 19th Century. Perhaps I'm just attached to the piece (from my personal Philadelphia collection), but I think a repair like that adds to the visual interest. Please review all of the pictures. All in all a beautiful example of 19th Century Philadelphia coin silver at its best!
