SOLD

Offered is an interesting American coin silver dessert spoon by a rare maker, Robert Johnston Brown of Boston, circa 1818-20. Born simply Johnston Brown, his petition to change his name to Robert Johnston Brown was granted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1813. He worked as Robert J. Brown & Co. from about 1818-20, before going in to partnership with Samuel Davis as Davis & Brown in 1820. This dessert spoon has a period engraved script monogram of "JGS" and a clear maker's mark (please see all pictures). It measures about 7 inches in length and weighs about 29 grams. Condition is good overall, with moderate wear from normal use and the bowl very slightly out of round, but no splits or repairs. All in all a very good example of a quite scarce mark!
