Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
Rare Waltham, Mass. Coin Silver Spoon by Rufus King Foss, Circa 1815
SOLD
Offered is an interesting and scarce example of the work of little-known Waltham, Massachusetts silversmith Rufus King Foss (1796-1836), working circa 1815. Mr. Foss seems not to have made much silver, as he seems to have made only a few spoons, mostly for family, and not to have advertised or been entered into public records as a silversmith. His descendants have inherited spoons bearing the maker's mark of R.K.FOSS that appears on this spoon in a clear strike. This spoon was probably not made for a family member, as the period engraved script initial is "P". This piece measures about 6 inches long and weighs about 14 grams. Condition is fair overall, with some surface wear and weathering, and stubborn spots of tarnish or discoloration, but with no splits or repairs. All in all a great example of this most uncommon of maker's marks!
