Offered is an interesting set of four American coin silver spoons marked BURROWS in a rectangular punch. They are also decorated with a period script "W" monogram. This mark has traditionally been assigned to a Norfolk, Virginia silversmith, although Cathy Hollan recently tentatively attributed it to a silversmith in Philadelphia. However, neither these spoons nor any others with this mark that have been observed (e.g., in the Winterthur collection online) bear any relationship to Philadelphia silver of the period. As such, this mark remains unsolved, and may or may not be associated with a Norfolk craftsman. These spoons measure about 5 7/8 inches in length and the set weighs a total of about 69 grams. Condition is fair, with no dents, splits or repairs, but some stubborn tarnish and a few rubber band marks on a couple of the spoons' necks. All in all a lovely set with unusual and attractive proportions!
