Offered is a superb pair of American coin silver dessert spoons by Philadelphia silversmith Phineas Fries (fl. 1837-61), circa 1837-50, featuring the die-struck "rose and vine" reserves on the handles for which Mr. Fries is best known. These beautifully featured decorations surround a period engraved script "SB" monogram on each spoon. The maker's mark and COIN mark on each spoon is clear and well struck. It is believed that this highly attractive pattern was manufactured only by the Fries brothers (Phineas and John), although it was retailed by several other Philadelphia silversmiths. Teaspoons decorated in this manner are sometimes seen, but tablespoons are rare, and dessert spoons much more so - these are the first I've seen. These dessert spoons measure about 7 1/2 inches in length, and the pair weighs a total of about 66 grams. Condition is excellent, with virtually no wear and no dents, splits or repairs. Please see all pictures. All in all a superb example of this form and pattern!
