Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
Philadelphia Tablespoon with Rare Mark of J. & S. Frank - 8.5 In., 41g
$29.50
Offered is a good American coin silver tablespoon from Philadelphia, made by James Watts and bearing the very rare retailer's mark of Jacob and Solomon Frank, working on N. 6th Street circa 1850-61. This mark is uncommon enough that no example was found in the preparation of the book "Philadelphia Silversmiths" by Cathy Hollan. This tablespoon measures about 8 1/2 inches in length and weighs about 41 grams. It is graced with a period engraved script "MJ" monogram. The Watts manufacturing marks are stamped on the neck, and the retailer's mark of J.&S.FRANK is rubbed but legible. Condition overall is good, with some modest wear and a few small dimples in the bowl, but no splits or repairs. All in all a nice example of a rare mark!
