Cliff Nunn - Antique Silver and Decorative Arts
Rare Birdback Teaspoon, George Harford of Phila. - Eagle Back w/Shield
SOLD
Offered is an extremely rare example of the work of Philadelphia silversmith George Harford (fl. 1789-1826), the first I've come across in decades. This example is a pictureback (birdback) teaspoon featuring a husky eagle with shield, making this piece even more special. This spoon has a rubbed but legible maker's mark for George Harford, a period engraved monogram of "MAH", and a well-preserved example of his die-struck eagle and shield decoration to the back of the bowl. This spoon measures about 5 1/2 inches in length, and weighs about 15 grams. Condition overall is excellent, with minimal wear and no dents, splits or repairs.
