SOLD

Offered is a highly unusual and rare American coin silver ladle from the 1830-50 period by Philadelphia silversmith Thomas Wriggins, which has a shell to the handle and a repoussé Peruvian National Coat of arms, or National Shield (Escudo Nacional). Per Peruvian law, "The arms of the Peruvian Nation shall consist of a shield divided into three fields: one celestial blue to the right, with a vicuna looking inside; other white to the left, with a Cinchona officinalis placed within, and another, red, in the bottom and smaller, with a cornucopia pouring coins, signifying with these symbols the treasures of Peru in the three realms of nature. The coat of arms shall be surmounted by a civic crown in flat view; and accompanied on each side by a flag and a standard of national colors, further described below." The repoussé work is quite good, and likely dates close to the time of manufacture of the piece. It may be that this ladle was given to a Peruvian official as a diplomatic gift, or purchased by the Peruvian Embassy or Mission to the United States for use. The repoussé work may have been done by Mr. Wriggins or another United States silversmith, but just as possibly was done by a Peruvian craftsman for the Peruvian government. This ladle measures about 7 3/4 inches in length and weighs about 55 grams. Condition is good overall, with modest surface wear and a few scratches, but no dents, splits or repairs. Please review all of the pictures. All in all a one-of-a-kind example of American coin silver with an international connection!
